Piriápolis
Piriápolis is a town about 30 minutes away from Punta del Este. It used to be the most popular tourist destination before Punta del Este overtook it. I've visitied Piriápolis and nearby beaches several times as it's easy to make the trip out from Punta del Este. There are plenty of fun activities to do in the area.
Cerro San Antonio is a large hill overlooking the city. You can either drive up to the top, walk up the hill or take the cable car. It offers some of the best views of the area. There are some vendors at the top with snacks and souvenirs. You will also get an up-close look at the terracotta statue of San Antonio at the top.
The rambla is the stretch alongside the main beach in the town. It's a great area to take a stroll down and enjoy the beautiful sights and people watch. There are several restaurants along the rambla.
There are some beautiful beaches nearby such as Punta Colorada. The beaches outside of the towns or cities are usually quieter which many people like. Punta Colorada is probably the most well-known beach in the area of Piriápolis.
Another nostalgic activity for me here is going to the gelato shop. There is a famous ice cream shop called El Faro which has delicious treats. There are many other ice cream stores here. I'd recommend stopping for one while walking along the rambla in town.
